on

Lebanon’s army said its troops are deploying to a “pilot zone” in the south of the country following the withdrawal of Israeli forces under a US-brokered agreement reached last month.

Engineering units entered the village of Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh in Nabatieh district on Tuesday morning, the army command announced.

Later, it said Israeli forces had opened fire in the vicinity of the troops. Israel’s military said warning shots had been fired after the troops crossed into the Israeli-declared “security zone”.

Wildfires continue to cause uncertainty for Spanish and French residents as more than 300,000 people have had to leave their homes.

The French interior minister said the Gironde wildfire has “a life of its own” and that firefighters are facing an “unprecedented situation”, while people in Bordeaux are growing “anxious and fearful”, one resident said, with the blaze around nine miles (15 km) from the outskirts of the city.

Over the border, Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez visited Valencia where more wildfires have broken out and said that the country was suffering under the effects of climate change.
