Prince Harry and Meghan land in UK | BBC News

Published

on

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have arrived back in the UK, BBC News understands.

Prince Harry, Meghan and their children Archie and Lilibet are believed to have flown into the country privately from California.

They will not return to official duties but will live in Britain as non-working royals. It is thought the family will base themselves at a private property outside of London in the Cotswolds area.

The Sussexes left the UK and stepped back from their royal duties in early 2020, before settling in California in March that year.

King Charles was told of the move earlier this month. The family visited the King at his Highgrove home in July this year, but it is understood the move was not discussed.

Before that visit, Prince Harry and Meghan had not been in the UK together since they attended the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.

Hundreds more tourists and locals feared dead after devastating flash floods in Nepal | BBC News

Published

on

At least 160 people are known to have died in massive flash floods and mudslides that engulfed a remote region on the Nepal-Tibet border. Hundreds more people, including travellers from many countries, are missing following the catastrophe.

The missing tourists include more than 100 from India, 54 from the US, and 33 from the UK, as well as more than 100 from Nepal itself, according to Nepal’s tourist board. The area is popular with pilgrims and trekkers.

Authorities initially thought an earthquake may have triggered a landslide – the US Geological Survey now says the “seismic energy was instead generated by a landslide”.

The area hit by the flood is home to two different high-altitude lakes that are also pilgrim sites revered by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains – Lake Mansarovar near Mount Kailash in Tibet, and the Gosaikunda lake in Nepal’s Rasuwa district.

Tens of thousands of tourists make their way through Nepal to Lake Mansarovar annually. The disaster struck at the time of the year when people, especially Indian tourists, visit the area. Travellers from 28 countries including India, China, Australia, the US and the UK are known to be among those missing.

Jane Hill presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Azadeh Moshiri and Ellie Price.

Ten months after a supposed ceasefire came into effect in Gaza, US President Trump’s peace plan for the strip has stalled.

More than 1,200 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes since the ceasefire was announced last October, bringing the total number killed during the war to more than 73,000 according to the Hamas run Health Ministry in the strip.

But there are fears the actual number of deaths could be significantly higher.

The Red Cross said there are more than 5,000 people still missing in Gaza.

Israel does not allow journalists free access to the territory.
