Auschwitz survivors to be joined by world leaders for 80 years since camp’s liberation | BBC News
Ceremonies are taking place to mark 80 years since the liberation of the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Some 1.1 million people, most of them Jews, were murdered at the Auschwitz complex, making it the site of the largest mass execution of human beings ever recorded.
About 50 survivors have returned to the site to lay wreaths and candles, and some will later give speeches at a service.
World leaders and King Charles are on their way to the event – but organisers want the dwindling number of survivors to be at the centre of the commemorations.
Polish President Andrzej Duda says his country’s job is to preserve the memory of Auschwitz “in order to never let it happen again”.

The US president has lost his court battle with CNN, Politico and MS NOW in the latest battle between Donald Trump and the media. What did the judge say and what happens next?
At the end of the last week Donald Trump banned three news outlets – CNN, Politico and MS Now – from reporting inside the White House. But the ban has been overturned – for now – in an emergency hearing by a federal judge, who ordered the banned journalistsâ press credentials be immediately reinstated for 14 days.
Itâs still not entirely clear what prompted Donald Trump to punish the outlets although itâs been reported that it may have been prompted by negative coverage he was shown by his aide, Natalie Harp.
In this episode, Justin, Anthony and Marianna speak to former CNN correspondent, anchor and bureau chief Frank Sesno, who is now a Journalism professor at The George Washington School of Media and Public Affairs. The latest row comes at a difficult moment for the president whoâs fighting historically low approval ratings and an unpopular war in Iran. Itâs yet to be seen what the president will do next after the judgement or if itâs a sign of growing pressure ahead of Novemberâs midterm elections.

This is the moment BBC Correspondent Michael Buchanan caught up to a former medical director who refused to cooperate with a review into failings at Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust which found that 155 babies may have survived with better care.
As part of her review, Donna Ockenden said 66 former and current senior NUH colleagues were approached, with only 35 interviewed. Keith Girling and other former executives failed to attend.
Girling replied “no comment” when questioned by the BBC about why he refused to speak to the Ockenden review.
