Demand for Indian mangoes soar as cargo fees rise | BBC News

Published

on

Entrepreneurs in New Jersey are making it big importing mangoes from India.

Yakin Shah and Bharat Kumar Parasana import about $20,000-worth at a time and sell them to their neighbours through WhatsApp.

Bharat said he spent more than $1 million importing the fruit last year.

This year, however, he’s spending more due to the war in the Middle East pushing up flight prices.

Mango correspondent Samira Hussain finds that in one New Jersey grocery store, a mango that typically goes for roughly 70 cents in India will sell for $5.

Hezbollah rejects renewed ceasefire agreed by Israel and Lebanon | BBC News

Published

The Lebanese armed group Hezbollah has rejected the terms of a US-backed ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon.

In a strongly-worded statement, the Iran-backed group’s leader Naim Qassem said negotiations had been “futile” and “humiliating” for Lebanon, and rejected categorically by “broad segments of the Lebanese people”.

It comes after Israel and Lebanon announced a renewal of their fragile ceasefire with the creation of “pilot” security zones inside Lebanon in which Hezbollah operatives would be banned.

In a joint statement released on Wednesday by the US State Department, the three countries said the deal was “contingent on a complete cessation” of fire by Hezbollah.

Donald Trump hits back at ‘unpatriotic’ vote after House rebukes him over Iran | BBC News

Published

on

US President Donald Trump has hit back at lawmakers who voted to send him a rebuke over the war in Iran, labelling the group “unpatriotic”.

On Wednesday, the US House of Representatives passed a measure that seeks to halt Trump from taking further military action.

In a post on Truth Social, the president wrote: “Yesterday, in a meaningless vote, the House voted, 4 bad Republicans and all of the Dumocrats, to limit my War Powers, right in the middle of my final negotiations to end the War with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Who would do such an unpatriotic thing.”

It is unclear how much legal force the House’s measure will have. The White House has dismissed its merits.

Sir Gareth Southgate on the challenges facing young men | BBC News

Published

on

Sir Gareth Southgate has said apprenticeships ‘have become a dirty word’ as he looks to tackle the issues facing young men when it comes to education and work.

Speaking to the Today programme about his new documentary, ‘Changing the Game for Young Men’, the former England men’s football manager said the issue is “complex” and pointed out that a lack of positive male role models can lead to boys looking elsewhere for guidance.

Sir Gareth also talked about the lack of vocational skills offered to those looking for less academic careers and said that a lot of young people are unable to gain the “work readiness” skills employers look for due to a decline in casual jobs.

The former footballer was also asked about England’s World Cup prospects, enthusing that he gets to “become an England fan again” after standing down as manager in 2024.
