Joe Biden allows Ukraine to strike inside Russia with missiles | BBC News

Published

on

US President Joe Biden has given the green light for Ukraine to use long-range missiles supplied by America to strike Russia, officials say.

The move marks a major change in policy for Washington which had refused for months to agree to Kyiv’s requests for authorisation to use the ATACMS missiles outside its own borders.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky reacted to the news – which came via briefings from US officials – saying “such things are not announced, missiles speak for themselves”.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously warned Western nations against such a move, saying it would represent the Nato military alliance’s “direct participation” in the Ukraine war.

UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, is also due to address the issue at the G20 summit of world leaders in Brazil, where he said shoring up support for Ukraine will be his top agenda.

Why the US-Israel war with Iran has been bad news for China too | The Global Story

Published

on

As the US-Israel war with Iran reaches a diplomatic stalemate – one idea seems to be taking hold: that China is the real winner.

Some have argued that the US’s biggest rival is quietly boosting its international standing, leverage and reputation as a reliable partner.

Yet beneath the surface the economic situation in China looks far less triumphant.

We speak to the BBC China Correspondent Laura Bicker who has been reporting from inside China’s factories and trading hubs to explore whether the potential political gains China may be accruing from the Iran war are being offset by the acute economic cost – and what this means for China’s long-term geopolitical ambitions.

New episodes of The Global Story are released daily. If you’re in the UK, listen on BBC Sounds. If you live outside the UK, listen on BBC.com or wherever you get your podcasts.
