Democrats ahead in big Republican states: Ohio, Kansas, Iowa, Texas | BBC Americast

Published

on

How confident should Democrats be about surprise new polling which puts them ahead in deep Republican territory? In states such as Kansas which haven’t elected a Democratic senator since 1932, Democrat candidates are doing well – why is that, and how much can we trust the polls?

The party’s hope for a blue wave in this year’s midterm elections rest on their ability to flip four Republican seats in the Senate. While the polls suggest the Democrats are ahead in Texas, Alaska and Ohio, the picture is more complicated in Democratic states like Maine and Michigan, which many believe the party must hold on to if they’re to reclaim control of Congress.

Sarah and Justin unpack the latest polls and what it tell us about Democrat and Republican strategy before we speak to the Democratic strategist and pollster John Anzalone. He’s currently working on Roy Cooper’s Senate campaign in North Carolina and most recently served on Joe Biden’s successful 2020 campaign. He tell us why Democrats should be cautious about hopes for a blue wave in November and the issues candidates need to focus on in the run-up to polling day.

What happened on the Flydubai flight to Israel? | BBC News

Published

on

What began as a routine flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned into a fight for survival when one pilot allegedly stabbed another inside the cockpit.

As the aircraft plunged tens of thousands of feet in minutes, passengers and crew were forced into extraordinary action.

This is the story of what unfolded on Flydubai flight FZ1073 and the plumber, dentist, banker and businessman who fought back to prevent disaster.

This video was published before the name of the co-pilot had been widely reported as Hamam al-Hammami, and officials in the United Arab Emirates had said that the co-pilot had attacked the pilot with a crash axe. An axe is normally kept in the cockpit in case of emergencies.

The US has withdrawn all of its bombers from RAF Fairford after reports of a new security threat to the base in Gloucestershire, UK.

US media said commanders received new information about a possible Iran-backed plot, prompting the bombers to be flown back to America.

The move comes after six men were arrested following reports of suspicious vehicles near the base last month.

All six have since been released on bail, while Iran has denied any involvement.

Rise in babies in care proceedings raises fears of unnecessary adoptions, experts say | BBC News

Published

on

The number of children involved in care proceedings before they reach their first birthdays is at a persistently high level across England, according to experts who have published new figures.

Data from the universities of Lancaster and Oxford indicates care proceedings for babies have risen by 64% over the past two decades, with one in 118 infants affected. The figures – up to 2024-25 – peaked during Covid, before dropping slightly and plateauing.

While there are cases where it is unsafe for parents to continue contact with their children, experts have told File on 4 Investigates that many babies may not have needed to go into care if support had been in place.

And, since very young children who go into care are more likely to be adopted than older children, there are also concerns from experts that some may have been permanently separated from their birth families unnecessarily.

The BBC understands that new guidance for Family Court judges, to significantly reduce the number of short-notice care hearings – within hours or days of a baby being born – will be announced before the end of the year.
