Coronavirus: primary schools in England may re-open in June – BBC News
Boris Johnson has said he hopes all primary age pupils in England can go back to school for a month before the summer break. And the government is advising that vulnerable children and the children of essential workers should return to school now.
The goal is for children to re-start Pre-school, Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 on June 1st, if the coronavirus risk level allows it.
There’s no return planned for England’s secondary school children before the summer break. But teachers are being asked to arrange face-to-face time before then, for pupils sitting key exams next year.
However teaching unions have said they have serious concerns about the government’s plan to re-start primary education in England.
In Scotland and Wales there’s no change to current policy and no planned school return dates. Scotland’s First Minister has said June 1st would be too soon for primary schools classes to start there.
And in Northern Ireland, the education minister has said pupils will probably start returning to school in September.
In Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, ministers have distanced themselves from the general approach of Boris Johnson to easing the lockdown. They are sticking to the “stay at home” advice which they insist is saving lives.

‘I’ve lived with death threats for 10 years’ Roberto Saviano – BBC News
Speaking out about the mafia can come at a price and for writer Roberto Saviano that has meant 10 years living under police protection. In a book published in 2006, he exposed the activities of the Camorra, a mafia organisation based in Naples, described as Italy’s most bloody and ruthless criminal group. Matthew Price spoke to Mr Saviano, for the Victoria Derbyshire programme, about living with a death threat from the mafia.

East Timor: ‘Stolen child’ reunites with family after 32 years – BBC News
They became known as East Timor’s stolen generation – around 4,000 children taken from their families in the 1980s and 1990s during Indonesia’s brutal occupation. Some were conscripted into the Indonesian military; others taken by religious groups or state institutions. Indonesia calls them the “separated children” and denies they were taken by force.
Now a local NGO is taking them back to East Timor – now an independent nation – for the first time. The BBC followed Alberto Mohamed, now 43, as he returns to track down his family.

Botswana’s Elephant Hunting Dilemma – BBC News
Hunting was banned under President Khama and Botswana was known for a zero-tolerance approach to poachers.
It was reported that in 2015 alone 30 Namibians, 22 Zimbabweans and an unknown number of Zambians were shot on suspicion of poaching.

Elephants can be very destructive when they encroach on to farmland and move though villages – destroying crops and sometimes killing people. Many rural communities believe the number of elephants is increasing, even though there is no evidence of this from scientific surveys.
But their “range” – how far the elephants travel – is expanding for a number of different reasons and that is increasing conflict between wildlife and humans. Many people believe this worsened after hunting was banned in 2013, and want it to be re-introduced.
The government has to balance lifting the hunting ban to win votes against the impact it may have on Botswana’s international reputation as a luxury safari destination.
