John Healey has refused to rule out tax rises in October’s budget as he dodged the question in a major speech in Coventry.

In his first major speech since taking over at the Treasury, Mr Healey acknowledged the impact of high government borrowing costs and promised to address the rising burden on businesses.

Mr Healey sought to present an optimistic assessment of the UK’s economic future despite the impact of global crises including the war in the Middle East and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Javier Milei has falsely declared the Falkland Islands to be “Argentinian” and branded the British territory “our future” during a highly anticipated national address on the archipelago.

The Argentine President began his televised speech by declaring: “The Falklands are Argentinian. Historically and legally. There can be no argument. They are part of the Argentine territory.”

The libertarian leader warned that his country’s claim to the British territory was facing a “clear and present danger” as he accused the UK of “failing to heed” United Nations calls not to take “unilateral actions” on the islands.

Cristo Foufas reels off a list Labour decisions that have impacted the economy, as he claims Andy Burnham is gaslighting the public by blaming Brexit and Margaret Thatcher for poor growth.

The Prime Minister, who faced his first grilling from MPs in six weeks, argued Britain had taken a “series of wrong turns” since the 1980s, before going on to blame Brexit for a decade of low growth.

Mr Burnham included Brexit alongside austerity, privatisation and deindustrialisation.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Burnham said: “Political power was centralised, economic power privatised, the country deindustrialised. Austerity followed, hollowing out councils and depriving them of the agency to act to reverse any of this.
