Jurgen Klopp, having vowed to avoid receiving a booking that would prevent him from attending the Anfield celebration in his honor on Sunday afternoon, ultimately stayed true to his word. Despite a tumultuous game at Villa Park resulting in a 3-3 draw, Klopp likely had to exercise considerable restraint. Before the game, he jokingly remarked, “They gave me Simon Hooper (as referee) – that’s the biggest challenge they could find!” indicating some truth in jest.
Known for his animated presence on the sidelines, Klopp appeared much calmer this time around, as if awaiting a delivery in his front yard. There would be no risking a touchline ban by letting his emotions boil over.
Arne Slot, who is expected to succeed Klopp, is likely closely monitoring Liverpool’s matches as he awaits official confirmation of his appointment. The Dutch coach has been candid about his potential role at Anfield and will be assessing the squad’s strengths and weaknesses ahead of his arrival.
With both Liverpool and Villa in positions where they couldn’t move higher or lower in the table, and with Villa likely to secure a top-four finish, there was a relaxed, end-of-season atmosphere to the game, with both teams looking dangerous when attacking.
Before the game began, Emi Martinez, Villa’s goalkeeper, was proudly proclaimed as “the world’s No.1” by the announcer. However, he suffered a horror moment when he inadvertently turned Harvey Elliott’s tame cross into his own net just two minutes into the game.
Liverpool scored their second goal through Cody Gakpo, who tapped in Joe Gomez’s cross after 23 minutes. Despite the first of three lengthy VAR checks ruling Gomez not offside, Gakpo’s goal stood. Jarell Quansah, who scored Liverpool’s third goal with a superb header in the second half, performed well for the rest of the game, making crucial blocks and interceptions.
However, an exhausted Alexis Mac Allister, who should have been substituted, made a mistake that allowed Jhon Duran to score Villa’s second goal. Duran’s equalizer was a stroke of luck, as Moussa Diaby’s pass struck him on the thigh and beat a wrong-footed Alisson.
While the late goals only caused superficial damage, Liverpool’s struggle against teams near the top of the table is a more concerning issue. Out of a possible 18 points against other top-four sides, Klopp’s team has only collected seven points, with only Villa being defeated back in September.
Although Klopp may no longer need to address such trends, it is likely to be a priority for Arne Slot next season. This pattern needs to change for Liverpool to improve their performance against top teams.
