Sir Salman Rushdie recalls New York knife attack two years on | BBC News

Published

on

Sir Salman Rushdie has spoken in chilling detail to the BBC about what he remembers of an attack two years ago, in which he was stabbed on stage.

The Booker Prize-winning author said his eye was left hanging down his face “like a soft-boiled egg”, and that losing the eye “upsets him every day”.

“I remember thinking I was dying,” he said. “Fortunately, I was wrong.”

The attack took place at an education institute in New York state in August 2022, as he was preparing to give a lecture.

He recalled how the assailant came “sprinting up the stairs” and stabbed him 12 times, including in his neck and abdomen, in an attack lasting 27 seconds.

The women exposing abuse in Iraq | BBC News

Published

on

This video contains distressing details.

Violence against women and girls in Iraq is widespread, but under reported, according to UN experts.

For incidents of sexual violence, there are no official figures. Human rights campaigners in the country say more needs to be done to protect women who speak out. They say threats and incitement against survivors should be investigated as crimes.

BBC Arabic’s Sally Nabil has been to Baghdad to speak to women who say family and social pressures discouraged them from speaking out, but have now decided to break their silence.

The Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen have continued to fire missiles towards Saudi Arabia, after a number of deadly attacks on Riyadh’s main international airport.

Almost all flights to and from the airport have been suspended. The Houthis say their actions are in retaliation for “brutal Saudi aggression” against areas they control in western Yemen.

Saudi Arabia’s energy minister Prince Abdul Aziz bin Salman told a conference in Riyadh that the seriousness of the attacks required an equally serious response from the Kingdom.
