Ukraine rejects Russian demand to surrender Mariupol – BBC News

Published

on

Ukraine has refused to surrender Mariupol, rejecting a demand from Russia to give up the city by the deadline of 05:00 Moscow time (02:00 GMT).

Russia had offered to set up humanitarian corridors so residents could leave in exchange for the city.

About 300,000 people remain trapped with little if any food, water and power in the city which has been incessantly bombed for the past two weeks.

Russia has struck several civilian shelters, schools, a hospital and a theatre.

Ukraine has said the Mariupol attacks are war crimes that will go down in history.

Golders Green stabbing suspect was referred to government’s counter-terrorism programme | BBC News

Published

on

The suspect in the Golders Green stabbings was referred to the UK government’s counter-terrorism Prevent programme in 2020, it has emerged.

This comes as two Jewish men, 34-year-old Shloime Rand and 76-year-old Moshe Shine, were attacked in London on Wednesday, which police are treating as a terrorist incident

The programme is a key part of the UK’s counter-terror strategy, and places a legal duty on public bodies to identify people who may turn to extremism.

However, the Metropolitan Police also said they “will not be providing any further information in respect of this matter at this time”.

UK airlines to be allowed to cancel flights in advance over fuel shortages | BBC News

Published

on

Airlines will be able to cancel flights weeks in advance, without losing valuable take off and landing slots at busy airports, if they face fuel shortages this summer.

New plans drawn up by the government will let carriers plan ahead, helping to avoid disruptive last-minute cancellations for passengers.

The proposals would allow airlines to merge flights on routes with multiple trips to the same destination on the same day, meaning passengers could be moved from their original booking to a similar one to save fuel.

The UK imports about 65% of the jet fuel it uses, a significant portion of which comes from the Middle East under normal circumstances. But, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz means those supplies cannot get through.

BP profits more than double as Iran war sends oil prices higher | BBC News

Published

on

BP’s profits for the first three months of the year have more than doubled following a surge in oil prices since the beginning of the Iran war.

In its first results since the conflict broke out, the energy giant reported profits of $3.2bn (£2.4bn) between January and March after an “exceptional” performance in its oil trading business.

The figure was higher than analysts had expected and far ahead of income in the same period last year which reached $1.38bn.

The oil price has seen sharp swings since the start of the US-Israel war with Iran as the key Strait of Hormuz – which usually carries about 20% of the global supplies of oil and liquid natural gas – has been effectively closed.
