Puberty blocking drugs – children “unlikely to be able to give informed consent” – BBC News

Published

on

The High Court in England has ruled that children under 16 – who say they want to change gender – are unlikely to be able to give their informed consent to treatment with drugs that block puberty.

The case was brought by a young woman who regretted her decision to have treatment and argued that a court order should be needed for children to take the medication.

Transgender campaigners have criticised the decision and the only NHS clinic to offer the treatment to children says it will appeal against the ruling.

Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting by social affairs correspondent Alison Holt.

A rare red weather warning is in place in the UK until 21:00 BST on Thursday.

It covers parts of southern England, as well as the Midlands and south Wales, with people in those areas warned there is a risk of serious illness or danger to life.

Southern England is forecast to see highs of around 37C on Wednesday – but could feel even hotter.

France, Spain and Italy have been the European countries hardest hit by the heatwave, with it expected to spread to the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany later this week.

Record-breaking temperatures in US and Europe heats up again | BBC News

Published

on

More than 165 million people across the US East Coast are sweltering under record temperatures as the Fourth of July holiday weekend gets underway.

The extreme heat will continue on Friday as the hottest spell of the year so far sends the mercury soaring to levels not seen, in some areas, in decades.

The heatwave could disrupt a busy weekend as US President Donald Trump hosts a celebration marking America’s 250th birthday and multiple World Cup matches take place outdoors.

It follows an unprecedented spell of early summer heat across Europe, with record highs across the continent.

Venezuelans accuse government of negligence over earthquake response | BBC News

Published

on

More than 1,700 people have been confirmed killed in the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela last week.

Delcy Rodriguez, the country’s interim president, has described it as the most brutal natural catastrophe in her country’s history.

Tens of thousands of people are estimated to be missing and anger against the government is growing. Residents say rescue operations were slow to start and were sorely inadequate.

The BBC’s International Correspondent Yogita Limaye reports from La Guaira, the coastal town hardest hit by the earthquakes.
