Does Putin admit any responsibility for ‘new Cold War’? – BBC News

Published

on

During his annual end-of-year news conference, Vladimir Putin was asked about relations between Russia and the West.
The BBC’s Steve Rosenberg asked the Kremlin leader whether Russian authorities consider themselves “white and fluffy” – a Russian expression which means squeaky clean – when it comes to accepting responsibility for worsening ties.
Mr Putin struck a defiant tone in an exchange with our correspondent when asked about Russia’s role in the poisoning of Alexei Navalny, the country’s most prominent opposition activist.

Sir Keir Starmer insists it was “personal decision” to resign in exclusive BBC interview | BBC News

Published

on

Sir Keir Starmer has spoken for the first time about what he called his “intensely personal decision”, alongside his wife and children, to accept that his political career was over.

The British prime minister had faced a series of resignations from his cabinet and calls from remaining ministers and backbench Labour MPs for him to step aside.

In his first interview since announcing his resignation, Sir Keir also warned Andy Burnham, his likely successor as Prime Minister, that he will have to spend just as much time dealing with global turmoil, during his time in number 10.

Sir Keir has faced criticism during his two year’s as prime minister, for the amount of time he has devoted to foreign affairs and spent on the world stage.

Jane Hill present BBC News at Ten reporting by Henry Zeffman.

Why are anti-migrant protests growing in South Africa? | Global News Podcast

Published

on

Thousands of protesters have marched in major South African cities this week, demanding that undocumented migrants leave the country.

Demonstrators say illegal immigration is putting pressure on jobs, public services and contributing to crime, while critics warn the protests risk fuelling xenophobia and attacks on foreign nationals.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged protesters to remain peaceful, while acknowledging the need for immigration reform.

Police say 25,000 migrants, most from other African countries, have been repatriated so far.

Published

on

Pop superstar Taylor Swift and American football player Travis Kelce have officially tied the knot in a star-studded ceremony officiated by comedian Adam Sandler.

The pair both donned Christian Dior, according to Swift’s longtime publicist, and elected to skip bridesmaids and groomsmen.

Instead, Swift’s brother Austin Swift served as her Man of Honour, while retired American footballer and brother of Travis, Jason Kelce, was the groom’s Best Man.

The event at Madison Square Garden shuttered one of Manhattan’s busiest corridors and brought out Hollywood’s A-list for what was likely the bash of the century.
