Cargo ship struck by projectile in strait of Hormuz as US insists ceasefire holding | BBC News

Published

on

A cargo vessel in the strait of Hormuz has been struck by unknown projectile, according to the UK maritime authority. It said the environmental impact of the incident was unknown.

It came as Iran launched more attacks on the United Arab Emirates which reported that it had intercepted 15 missiles and drones on Monday.

However the US insisted that the 4-week long ceasefire with Iran was continuing. The US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the objectives of “Operation Epic Fury” had been concluded and the offensive stage of the war with Iran was “over”.

The US defence secretary Pete Hegseth claimed that Project Freedom, the operation by the US Navy to ensure safe passage of commercial ships through the strait was proving a success. It was reported that two ships had safely passed through the strait on the second day of the US operation. More than 1,500 ships remain trapped in the Gulf.

Iran’s top negotiator said “we know well that the continuation of the status quo is intolerable for America, while we are just getting started.”

Fiona Bruce presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Sarah Smith and Jeremy Bowen.

How can how we solve the planet’s food waste problem? – BBC News

on

The amount of good food we waste would fit into 23 million fully-loaded 40-tonne trucks.

And if these trucks were lined up bumper-to-bumper, then the queue would be long enough to circle the Earth seven times.

Why do we waste so much food and what can we do about it? The BBC’s Aaron Heslehurst explains.

Iran will be ‘blown off the face of the Earth’ if it attacks US vessels, says Trump | BBC News

Published

on

The US “should be wary of being dragged back into a quagmire”, the Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has warned, as US President Donald Trump’s plan to free ships stuck in the Strait of Hormuz threatens the US-Iran ceasefire.

Trump said in an interview with Fox News on Monday that Iran would be “blown off the face of the Earth” if the country attacks US vessels during “Project Freedom”.

But Iran insists that it controls the strait and on Monday fired missiles and drones at military and commercial ships, according to the US.

South Korea and the UAE reported damage to commercial ships, while a reported Iranian attack caused a fire at a UAE oil depot.

Around 2,000 ships are estimated to be stuck in the Strait of Hormuz.
