Support for Hamas grows in occupied West Bank | BBC News

Published

on

Since the war began n Gaza, violence has escalated in the occupied West Bank.

Raids by Israeli forces have become more frequent and many Palestinians have been killed.

Protests by Palestinians have gathered strength and support for Hamas is growing.

While Israel and its allies condemn Hamas as a terrorist organisation, increasing numbers of Palestinians in the West Bank support its armed resistance to Israeli occupation.

Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Lucy Williamson.

    Not surprising at all..
There has been no better financial backer for Hamas that Netanyahu et al..
And no better recruiting poster than killing 19, 000 civilians, making 2 million homeless and destroying all infrastructure…
Iran has manipulated them and the US to exactly where they want them.

Does Israel pay the BBC to minimise coverage of GENOCIDE in Palestine?
Does the death of so many, in a one sided war not deserve reporting?

The West Bank is an occupied territory, where there are 700000 illegal settlers, they have their homes destroyed, forced out at gun point and with violence- they have to go through endless check point just to get home , they have restricted electricity, water , 1000s have been kidnapped and put in jail without charges , mostly children. I could go on and on – but you want to talk about this. The mainstream media is 💀

Israel shouldn't even be in the West Bank but Obviously are to Subvert the Land just as Israeli Home Building Projects have been ruled illegal but US Britain refuse to Enforce the Law just as they don't enforce International Geneva Convention on Humanitarian Law in Gaza ! 🇵🇸🙏🇵🇸

Disgusting BBC, look how you frame it with that title. Israeli illegal settlers armed to the teeth are rampaging against unarmed Palestinians because palestinians in West bank precisely renounced arms. Now you want to imply they are radicalised. Its the israeli settlers who are radicalised. Why does israel punish Palestinians for Germanys crime?

The 'West Bank' is Judea, the ancient land of the Jews.

The Jews are from Judea, where the Judean mountains runs along the spine of Israel, where the tribe of Judah had its tribal allotment. The Jews are the native people of the Holy Land. The ‘Philistines’ came from the Greek Isles, originally; these modern ‘Palestinians’ have no relation to them at all. They are Persian, Egyptian, Bedouin, Turkish, Syrian, and Arabian, mostly.

The term 'West Bank' is a modern term with no historical significance. There was never a country called 'Jordan' before the modern state of Jordan was created out of whole cloth by Great Britain using 75% of the 'mandate for Palestine'.

Victory for Joe Biden: “It’s time for America to unite and to heal” – BBC News

Published

on

Joe Biden has said he is “honoured and humbled” after winning the US Presidential election. He crossed the threshold of 270 Electoral College votes needed by winning the states of Pennsylvania and Nevada.

In a statement the President-Elect said: “In the face of unprecedented obstacles, a record number of Americans voted. Proving once again, that democracy beats deep in the heart of America. It’s time for America to unite. And to heal.”

The election has seen the highest turnout since 1900. Mr Biden has won more than 73 million votes, the most ever recorded for a US presidential candidate.

The result denies Donald Trump a second term after a divisive presidency defined by the coronavirus pandemic, bitter culture wars and social unrest.

Tina Daheley presents BBC news reporting from north America editor Jon Sopel in Washington and Nick Bryant with the Biden campaign in Wilmington, Delaware.

Coronavirus: Trump claims advice to inject disinfectant was just “sarcasm” – BBC News

Published

on

One of the world’s biggest disinfectant manufacturers has issued an urgent warning, after President Trump suggested people could inject themselves with the substance to treat coronavirus.

The company which makes products including Dettol and Vanish warned that “under no circumstance” should its products be administered to humans “through injection, ingestion or any other route”.

Disinfectants are poisonous if ingested and even external exposure can be dangerous to the skin, eyes and respiratory system. The President’s comments were heavily criticised by medical experts. Later he said he was simply being sarcastic. 50,000 people have now died in the United States from coronavirus infection.

Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reporting from North America Editor Jon Sopel.

Brexit: MPs block Prime Minister’s bid for early election – BBC News

Published

on

The UK Prime Minister’s demand for an early General Election looks set to be rejected by Members of Parliament after opposition parties agreed it shouldn’t take place until after the European Union Summit in mid-October.

Labour, the Liberal Democrats, the Scottish National Party and Plaid Cymru the party of Wales say they won’t back the government’s bid for an election. They declared they wanted an extension to the Brexit date of October 31st to guarantee that the UK won’t leave the EU without a deal.

On a visit to Scotland, Mr Johnson accused them of making an “extraordinary political mistake”. It came as the House of Lords approved a bill to prevent a no-deal Brexit. It will get royal assent and become law on Monday.

Our Deputy Political Editor John Pienaar reports, Reeta Chakrabarti presents.

Brexit trade deal finally agreed – BBC News

Published

on

A post-Brexit trade deal has finally been agreed, four and a half years after the UK voted to leave the European Union.

The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said it would protect jobs and provide certainty for business.

After months of talks and frantic last-minute wrangling over fishing, negotiators finally reached agreement on Christmas Eve, with just a week to go before the deadline when the UK’s transition period was coming to an end.

The president of the European Commission, Ursula Von de Leyen, described it as a good and fair agreement.

Some business leaders said the agreement had come as a “huge relief”. However others — along with some British politicians — said they would wait to study the details of the agreement before reaching a judgement on it.

Sophie Raworth presents BBC News reporting by political editor Laura Kuenssberg, Europe editor Katya Adler, business editor Simon Jack, deputy political editor Vicki Young, James Cook in Glasgow, Tomos Morgan in Cardiff and Emma Vardy in Belfast.
