Russia a ‘risk’ to undersea cables, defence chief warns – BBC News

Published

on

The UK’s most senior military officer has warned of a new threat posed by Russia to communications and internet cables that run under the sea.
Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach, the chief of the defence staff, said Britain and Nato needed to prioritise protecting the lines of communication.
He said it would “immediately and potentially catastrophically” hit the economy if they were cut or disrupted.
The cables criss-cross the seabed, connecting up countries and continents.

Tell me why all this crap has to happen in this world. In 2023 you have a country simply invading another country because they don't want it to join nato. Now the other clowns in russia now are threatening to cut communications for the world. Not even that but also to end the world with nuclear weapons, you can't make this crap up. So we have a couple of people that are determined to change or even destroy the world because they don't want a country, Ukraine , to join nato, fuck me what an absurd freaking reason to end the world.

Clog the shipping lanes, blow up the gas pipelines, cut the internet cables.. I think they might even halt the flow of money itself. And I'm guessing they disable credit systems

How prosthetics tech is training robots | BBC News

Published

Tech Now’s Paul Carter finds out how technology powering advanced prosthetics is also helping train humanoid robots.

The Ability Hand is a special piece of prosthetics technology, with two ambitions running through the same piece of hardware.

One is to give somebody their grip back. The other is to take what that person’s hand already knows – and teach it to a machine.

Signal boss Meredith Whittaker says AI ‘can always be controlled’ | BBC News

Published

AI can always be controlled, the president of encrypted messaging app Signal has told the BBC.

Meredith Whittaker said fears that AI could become conscious and take over were “not anchored in science and evidence”, warning instead about the dangers of using the technology in military decision-making.

The former Google employee said AI could “supercharge mistakes” and reflected on her role in opposing the company’s involvement in a US military drone surveillance project.

Speaking to the BBC Global Women, Whittaker also questioned who gets to shape the future of AI, criticised the concentration of power in Silicon Valley and explained why Signal would leave a country rather than compromise its users’ privacy.

Chinese AI tool told researchers how to make bioweapons | BBC News

Published

on

Developer Moonshot is conducting an internal review after researchers were able to persuade two of its popular Kimi models to tell them how to make biological weapons and carry out assassinations.

Mindgard, which tests the security of AI systems, told the BBC it discovered in July that Kimi K2.6 and K3 Swarm could evade safety limits put in place by developers.

It arose during a process called “jailbreaking”, where researchers use a series of complex instructions to see if AI tools ignore guardrails – which Mindgard said should have stopped Kimi from discussing concerning topics.

Moonshot told the BBC it welcomed third-party input “as a key pillar for building better and safer AI”.
