This report provides an analysis of the Indian green cardamom market as of August 2026, examining recent weather patterns, harvest progress, demand dynamics, and global supply considerations.

OVERVIEW
The market has shown improving quality metrics following challenging early-season weather. A 40% rainfall deficit in June was reversed by monsoon rains beginning mid-July, supporting crop health in late-stage development. Current harvest rounds are showing improving seed density in pod analysis, though large-pod availability remains limited.

KEY FINDINGS

Weather & Crop Outlook
– El Niño effects created unseasonably high temperatures through early season
– June experienced a critical 40% rainfall deficit
– Mid-July monsoon reversal stabilized crop health and soil moisture
– National crop volume remains below prior year, but late-season precipitation supports continued development

Harvest Progress & Quality
– First and second harvest rounds are underway in primary growing zones
– Pod analysis indicates improving seed density progression
– Large-pod availability remains constrained relative to historical norms
– Price spreads between grades remain at historically wide levels due to scarcity of premium sizes

Demand Landscape
– Domestic demand is elevated as festival season approaches, drawing down local pipeline inventory
– Export demand remains subdued, constrained by Middle East shipping disruptions, elevated ocean freight costs, and extended transit times
– Local market levels remain firm due to strong domestic pull

Global Supply Considerations
– Guatemala crop shipments are expected to enter the market in 2-3 months
– Current timing creates an immediate supply window for Indian origin material
– This window provides an opportunity for buyers with near-term requirements to secure inventory before additional global supplies arrive

Price Analysis & Convergence
– Emperor Akbar Purple (8.0mm) grade serves as the benchmark at 0% discount
– Emperor Akbar Green (7.0mm) grade currently trades at 15.0% discount
– Emperor Akbar Red (6.0mm) grade trades at 33.8% discount
– With new harvest arrivals, current discount spreads are projected to narrow by approximately 10.0%
– The green grade discount is expected to narrow from 15.0% to 13.5% (representing 1.76% relative value appreciation)
– The red grade discount is expected to narrow from 33.8% to 30.4% (representing 5.09% relative value appreciation)

STRATEGIC OBSERVATIONS
Current price spreads between grades remain at exceptional levels. As new harvest volume reaches the market, these spreads are forecast to normalize. Buyers with near-term supply requirements should evaluate current pricing in this context.
